Rafael LuzRafael first conducted NYCO in the fall of 2014. Rafael brings his passion for music from his native Brazil where he returns annually to teach at the Eleazar de Carvalho Festival and conduct the Festival Orchestra. A strong believer in developing an appreciation for classical music and music-making from grass roots, Rafael taught string instruments to kids and adults in very poor areas of São Paulo, creating six string orchestras that bring classical music to people unaccustomed to this genre.

Luz is a versatile conductor with experience in both the operatic and symphonic repertoire. Conducting engagements have taken him to Europe, South and North America.

Rafael earned his Master of Arts in Conducting from the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York and a Bachelor of Arts in Conducting from the FAAM in São Paulo and recently received his Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Toronto.
